i do have a very specific approach with film scoring. whenever it's possible i record with real musicians. it might be a little bit surprising for the english-speaking reader that the use of real musicians as opposed to computers is being stressed here. however, if you know the austrian film industry you also know that there are many, many productions out there that rely on computer generated film scores, as opposed to the music being played live. scores that would be judged as a better layout in hollywood end up in the final product.
but the advantage of live music for the final product is amazing: the score comes to life much more than it would be possible with a synthesized or sampled orchestra, guitar, or whatever it might be that is being recorded. of course there is a full layout before the musicians are recorded, so the director is able to judge whether the music is appropriate for the scene and for the director's taste. then everything is recorded and mixed. since i have access to a full orchestra it is possible to get any instrumentation that is wanted, even with smaller budgets. the real power of film scoring can be unleashed only if there are real musicians playing!
